There was lots of excitement within the Dr Dev team last week as the whole product range was launched on TV shopping channels across the whole of the Middle East and North Africa.

15 countries in total have signed up to showcase the range including Dubai, Saudi Arabia and all Arabic speaking countries and the presentations went live on the 14^th of July.        

After many months of negotiation,  Dr Dev and I flew to Dubai to meet with the bosses of Citruss TV based in the Media City.  They service a huge audience of discerning buyers, and were so impressed with the Dr Tuhin Dev Skin Care range that they placed an order that day. We were even more delighted when, within a few hours of leaving the meeting they called to increase their order.

Recently a comparison trial was done to study the changes in the skin using different anti-aging products. At the begining of the study the candidates skin condition was analysed by skin care expert Nick Miedzianowski-Sinclair at the Cosmetic Imaging Studio using the latest Visia Imaging technology, which gives a snapshot of the skin including the number and depth of wrinkles.  At the end of the 6 weeks study, the candidates skin were again analysed using the Visia Imaging technology. We were really pleased with the results!

Hold the Botox! Can you really get the same from a jar?

A new generation of high-end beauty creams claim to mimic the effects of Botox. But do they live up to the hype?

Ever looked longingly at the impossibly smooth skin of celebrities and wondered what their secret is?
It may just be they’ve had a little help in the form of (whisper) Botox.
If you’ve ever considered the jab but found the idea a bit scary, a new range of cosmeceuticals (think cosmetics meets science) could be for you.
These beauty treatments contain high strength active ingredients designed to improve ageing skin.There are even some that contain a synthetic snake venom, which Cheryl Cole, Kate Moss and Victoria Beckham are said to be big fans of. The products aim to give similar results to “baby Botox”, which is targeted, subtle Botox.

Our cosmeceutical testers were given a skin MOT using the latest Visia imaging technology, which gives a snapshot of the state of the skin including the number and depth of wrinkles.
Six weeks later they returned for another analysis and the moment of the truth.
But would their skin have improved, without going under the needle?

The Botox guinea pig
Emma Roberts, 45, a PR and marketing consultant from Liverpool, had a combination of babytox and microtox.
The strength is the same as regular Botox but smaller amounts are given over two sessions though six out of 10 people don’t need a top up. This avoids the dreaded “frozen face” look.

Lesley Reynolds-Khan, of the Harley Street Medical Skin Clinic, says: “Less is more.
We never overdo it because we have clients who are well known on TV and can’t change their looks overnight.”

Lorella Thorp, 43, a financial controller from Blackheath, London, tested Dr Tuhin Dev.

Dr Nick Says: “Lorella has interesting skin – she has a young child and is finding it very tiring, so she’s a good subject. She got strong improvement, most significant is how the wrinkles are breaking down from 14 to nine. She nearly doubled her percentile measurement in six weeks. This is the best result.”

Cream 2
Samantha Broadfoot, 38, a barrister from Greenwich, tested Skin.NY.
Skin.NY has an active ingredient, QAL-100, a highly powerful antioxidant. It claims to protect cells against the damaging effects of free radicals and increase production of collagen. Right Side:
Percentile: before 54%, after 62% – an 8% improvement.
Wrinkle intensity: before 5.431, after 4.404.
Wrinkle count: before 19, after 17.

Left Side:
Percentile: before 66%, after 64%.
Wrinkle intensity: before 3.899, after 3.986.
Wrinkle count: before 15, after 16.

Dr Nick Says: “Sam had the best skin to start with. She had some improvement under her eyes on the right side of her face, from 5.4 to 4.4. I think she would have had a continued improvement with the highlevel cream over the six weeks.”

Cream 3
Dominique Dobinson, 41, a full-time mum from South London, tested Syence.
Syence has an active ingredient, Servital. As skin ages, it thins, leading to more wrinkles.

Percentile: before 54%, after 60% – a 6% improvement.
Wrinkle intensity: before 6.228, after 5.639.
Wrinkle count: before 24, after 20.

Left Side:
Percentile: before 43%, after 43%
Wrinkle intensity: before 7.878, after 7.814
Wrinkle count: before 22, after 22

Dr Nick Says: “Dominique’s skin improved, especially on the right side of her face. This could be due to her being righthanded and applying cream better on one side or it could be how she sleeps. Overall her skin texture improved and dramatic wrinkles lessened. On the left side the wrinkles shortened and weren’t as deep. A good result.”

WHICH IS BETTER – BOTOX OR BOTTLE?
Botox is a one-time treatment, meaning you do it once and can top it up as required every three months or longer. But you have to use the creams every day.”People can have a very positive reaction to Botox and sometimes they have no reaction at all,” says skin expert Nick Miedzianowski-Sinclair. “It doesn’t work for everybody.It takes a couple of weeks to kick in then it holds for anywhere between three and 12 months. But the upshot can be that it re-educates the muscles so you frown less for instance and is useful for deep wrinkles, such as frown lines between the brows.”
“If you don’t like the idea of injections, the right cream can offer great results on finer lines and skin tone and texture. Six weeks is long enough to see an improvement.”

TIPS FOR GREAT SKIN
(1) PREPARE FIRST “A microdermabrasion exfoliator will improve the surface and cleanliness of skin so the impact of cream will be greater,” says Nick.
(2) BLOT SKIN DRY ON KITCHEN ROLL “Dirt collects on the towel, no matter how often you change it and is transferred back to your skin.”
(3) DON’T APPLY CREAM AT BEDTIME “Early evening is ideal for the cream to sink in rather than end up on the pillow.”
(4) LOOK AT YOUR MUM “If she looks great for her age, odds are you will, but lifestyle plays a part.”
(5) WEAR SUNSCREEN! UVA light is the number one cause of premature ageing so it’s vital to use a 5* UVA sunscreen on your face even in winter.

THE RESULTS EXPLAINED..
Percentile: We compared the testers to other women of the same age on the database to find out how their skin rates. Percentiles are measured out of 100 with 1% the lowest – the higher your percentage rating, the better your skin condition.
Wrinkle Count: We counted the number of wrinkles before and after.
Wrinkle Intensity: We measured how deep the wrinkles were.

Nick Miedzianowski-Sinclair, who measured the testers’ skin, says: “To see an improvement, you want the percentile to go up and the intensity to come down. The number of wrinkles could actually go up as wrinkles start to break down. Instead of one big wrinkle, you get two or three smaller, less deep ones.”

I have been asked quite a few times about how our anti-wrinkle face serum, Essential Elixir compares to Botox®. So I have created a simple table listing the advantages of our serum and Botox®. Each product have their own role to play in helping to maintain a more youthful appearance.

First of all let me wish you a Very Happy New Year.  May this year bless you and your loved ones with good health, success, laughter and the things that your heart has been wishing for. This is a special New Year as it also ushers in a new decade.  A period we hope that will bring better global understanding and peace.

The past decade has seen many changes take place on the world map that has touched and shaped our lives in one way or the other. I can’t recall of any other period in our lives, be it the 70’s, 80’s or even the 90’s that has been so volatile.  Peace and safety which many of us take for granted in our daily lives, have been shattered by war and terrorism in many parts of the world, leaving children without parents and parents without children. While the 80’s and  90’s saw the world bring down the walls that separated people, we in the past decade have seen governments raise walls once again to protect their own from the fear of the unknown.

Even something as enjoyable as travelling has changed from being fun to becoming stressful. Previously for some, the fear of travel was mainly due to phobias or travel sickness. But today even those who used to get onto a flight or train without a worry in the world do so at times with some amount of fear in the back of their minds.

The financial meltdown which we are still reeling from was like a tsunami that spread through the global financial markets without any warning or mercy. It left a trail of carnage like never before seen, affecting individuals, institutions and even governments. Financial institutions which were once considered to be invincible were brought down to their knees.  The less fortunate ones did not even have that privilege. Millions of individuals, who have worked hard over the years to secure a better financial future for themselves and their families, suddenly saw their savings disappear or even worse being left in debt. There are very few who have not been affected by the financial crisis.

Even Mother Nature did not spare us. She has shown her wrath through the tsunami of 2004, hurricane Katrina, forest fires in California, earthquakes, drought & famine, and floods. These events are happening more often than ever before.  The global climate change is becoming more violent, with many scientists believing that if we do not act immediately to calm down Mother Nature, she may be on a path of no return.

If we are willing to reflect upon and learn from the events of past decade, we will see that many of these situations were created by our own actions. We always have a choice, but the right path may sometimes be the road less travelled.

As we venture into this new decade let us do so by working together with each other to make this the ‘best decade’ of our lives. Not only at a personal level, but by also taking an interest in the world we live in. We need to better understand and respect the world we live in, and it will be more respectful towards us.

In a world of uncertainty, hope is the one thing that we all have and will always have. So with hope in our hearts, let us begin that change so that when we step out of this decade, we will do so knowing in our heart’s that we have each done our part to make this a safer and a more beautiful world for us and our children.

Hannah aged 31 years is the youngest of the candidates in the study. Wrinkles were not an issue for her. She had slightly dry skin and was more interested in improving her over all complexion and skin tone.  During the study she preferred using the Core Rejuve-Night cream even during the day. Unlike many night creams which may be a little too rich or greasy, Core Rejuve-Night cream is light and easily absorbed because it uses a carbohydrate complex as the main moisturising ingredient instead of heavy oils or butters.
Hannah believes in taking care of her skin from an early age, so as to protect and maintain her skin health for the future.

Dawn is in her late 50’s. She loves her time in the sun. Her main concern has been the extensive photodamage on her face due to prolonged exposure to the sun, and the smoker lines around her lips.  During the study her skincare regime consisted of applying the Essential Elixir anti-wrinkle face serum generously all over her face and neck. She would massage the serum till it was totally absorbed into her skin, and then follow it up by applying the Core Protect-Day cream in the morning and the Core Rejuve-Night cream at night. The Core Rejuve-Night cream is great, because it contains a cocktail of 14 potent active ingredients to rejuvenate the skin.

Wendy is aged 47 years.  Her concern has been the lines in the crow’s feet area. During the study her skincare regime consisted of using half an ampoule of Essential Elixir anti-wrinkle face serum in the morning and the remaining amount of serum at night. She also used the Core Protect-Day cream in the morning as her day time moisturiser and Core Rejuve-Night cream at night. She used the Cleansing Balm as her daily cleanser.

During the development of our formulations, I had only one mantra in mind….’Function First’. The aim was to create an age defence skincare range that actually works!  A skincare range that visibly improves skin health.

After many years of research and development the formulations finally took shape. We knew we had a good thing here as the formulations had some wonderful ingredients that were skillfully blended together to create the skincare range that we have today.

Every time we spoke to people about the great ingredients in our products, they were mighty impressed, even though the details of the scientific data often flew above their heads!  This was sometimes frustrating but a reality. We wanted to find a way to get our message across in the shortest possible time but in a clear manner. It then dawned upon us that ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’!

In the spring of 2009, we got together and decided to take our products for a ‘test drive’. This was a time of great excitement as well as high anxiety especially for me, as we knew that even though we had great products in theory with scientific data to back up the efficacy of the main active ingredients, it was still all theory for the finished product.  

To test the finished products in a study was like venturing into unknown territory, not knowing if the results would be for us or against us. After much thought we decided to go ahead with the study, as it would once and for all prove if the formulations that were so painstakingly developed were effective only in theory or effective in real life as well.  This was something that was important for us to know.

So we bit the bullet and started making preparations for the study to begin in the summer of 2009. We wanted women from the age group of 30 years onwards, who were willing to give up their existing skincare regime and use only our products during the study period which would last a few months.  The aim of the study was to take a ‘before’ and a series of ‘after’ photos at 6 weeks interval, so as to see the visible changes in the facial skin while using our product over a period of a few months

We were really fortunate that we had 4 lovely ladies in the UK of different age groups that volunteered to participate in our study.  The study began on 4^th June 2009.

For the study we commissioned an independent photo studio to take the before and after photos. The reason for using an independent photo studio was to have a professional photographer take the photos with a professional camera in a proper studio setting. And also to make sure that things such as lighting, candidate distance & position, and camera settings would be kept as consistent as possible for each photo shoot during the study period. For each photo session, the candidates had to wash off all makeup, pull back their hair with a hair band, remain still and not smile.  They have been brilliant as they have followed all instructions given to them, and none of them have ever missed a photo session.

The results for each candidate can be seen in the following postings in this (Case Studies) category. Both the candidates and we were really pleased with the results. The results have far exceeded our expectations.

In 2010 we will do another study to include women and men of varying age groups and skin types. So watch this space ……
